Made Obsolete By
This skill became somewhat obsolete with the invention of the microwave popcorn bag. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn_bag
Knowledge Assumed
You must know how to use a stove.
When useful
When you want delicious popcorn without the trans fat, disgusting "butter" flavor, and sodium of microwave popcorn.
When you need to pop large quantities of popcorn.
-
Buy a bag of popcorn kernels and your trans fat-free oil of choice (extra virgin olive oil recommended).
-
Pour 1/8 inch of oil in the bottom of a medium sauce pan and drop one kernel of corn in the middle.
-
Heat the pan over medium high heat.
-
When the single kernel explodes, pour a single layer of popcorn kernels into the pan.
-
Cover the pan.
-
Let the pan heat, swirling and shaking gently occasionally.
-
When the pops slow to one every second or two, remove the pan from the heat immediately.
-
Pour the popcorn into a large bowl.
-
Salt to taste.
